Opportunity Snapshot

The importance of product safety in any food operation is paramount. . . so if you really "get" the importance of safety & GMP, this is your chance to step up to this hands-on leadership opportunity and spearhead employee safety and training programs to push us to the next level.

As Safety Manager, you will take a proactive approach to safety, not only identifying trends and issues but also prioritizing issues and developing strategies for resolving them. You'll also develop and implement basic employee training programs and wear your HR Generalist "hat" to deal with ER issues at a unionized plant. Pivotal to your success is your ability to really understand and get the best out of shop floor personnel; you will not be afraid to walk the floor, donning your lab coat, safety goggles and hair net as you model best practices in safety, creatively engage the team and galvanize them to achieve higher levels of performance.

While we are not at liberty to disclose our name until you have been fully qualified, we are a manufacturer of frozen foods. We are poised for big growth in spite of a recessionary economy.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education & experience.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of related experience with expertise in workers compensation, OSHA and GMP; food manufacturing background is a big plus.
  • Deep expertise in all federal, state, local and company regulations.
  • The ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures.
  • Leadership savvy and the ability to lead an organization through incremental change.
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills; must be bilingual in English & Spanish to communicate effectively with ethnically diverse work force.
  • Computer proficiency in a Microsoft Office environment.

What's in It for You

  • Influence & impact -- you'll position yourself as the "go-to" technical expert on all employee safety issues and the safety programs you drive today will shape our reputation and profitability in the marketplace for years to come.
  • Career development -- as you help us grow, you'll pave the way for your own career growth and be ideally positioned to pursue a variety of career paths within our dynamic organization.
  • Autonomy -- while we have clearly defined expectations in terms of safety targets, we'll look to you to achieve your goals with minimal supervision; you'll have plenty of support when you need it and "elbow room" when you don't.
  • Great environment -- we are proud not only of our clean facilities, but also of our positive and collaborative culture.
  • Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus potential, we offer a rich benefits package that includes all you would expect plus a few features that will pleasantly surprise you. For example, our medical and dental plans are 100% paid, and our 401(k) plan features a generous employer contribution based on company performance.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details. As you come on board, you will focus on accomplishing the following key objectives:
  • Identify and prioritize key safety issues and ensure that our safety program works in our zero tolerance environment.
  • Develop a training program (from scratch) that speaks to your audience's level of understanding and make it real for them.
  • Establish yourself as a quality expert and build credibility within the executive management team.
In a nutshell, you will spend about 80% of your time with day-to-day safety and training issues; and the remaining 20% with general HR responsibilities, mostly employee relations in a unionized environment.

Keys to Success

In addition to technical savvy, success in our dynamic environment calls for a "people" person who can share your enthusiasm for safety with the hourly workers that you support and get results through persuasion and motivation, but who also can be assertive when necessary. Additional "keys" to your success include:
  • High-energy -- you'll showcase a sense of urgency and solid focus to manage multiple priorities as you provide impeccable technical support to the management team.
  • Self-motivation -- in an environment with little micro-management, we'll depend on you to be highly driven, efficient, and organized and work independently to accomplish your goals.
  • Respect for safety -- there is simply no room for compromise in safety; outbreaks of foodborne illnesses have spawned lawsuits and liability claims costing careless companies millions in settlements and millions more in reputation damage. We'll look to you to continually act as a safety champion, follow the highest standards of safety throughout all operations and take an active part in our ongoing training, education, and awareness building activities.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
